Why Green Grove?

The Green Grove Initiative strives to educate tailgaters, students, faculty and staff about the importance of recycling in the Grove and Circle on game days. Each year, thousands of pounds of waste is produced from tailgating. Our goal is to divert that as much of that waste as possible away from the landfill so it can be recycled and reused. Volunteers are responsible for passing out recycling bags before home games and educate others about what can and cannot be recycled.

When:

Game day volunteering begins about 4 hours before each home game. Volunteers work 2 hours and will be done working about 30 min. before the team goes down the Walk of Champions.

Sorting volunteering occurs on the Mondays and Tuesdays after home games from 1-3 p.m. Volunteers may arrive or leave at anytime depending on their schedule.

Where:

Game day volunteers meet at the white recycling trailer.

Sorting volunteers work at the Oxford Recycling Center down S. Lamar. Rides are available to the Recycling Center at 1 p.m. and back to campus at 3 p.m.

Volunteer Support

The Green Grove Initiative is supported by individual volunteers as well as local/campus organizations, businesses, and alumni. You can help either by volunteering on game days to educate tailgaters on how to recycle in the Grove, or by volunteering throughout the weeks following home games to sort the collected recyclables at the Oxford Recycling Center with the Green Grove Initiative Team.

Education and Outreach

Volunteers will provide education and outreach on the Green Grove Initiative to tailgaters in the Grove and Circle by informing them on the recycling system, as well as make sure each tent has a recycling bag. Additionally, Green Grove volunteers can help sort collected recyclables in the days following game day. For further information on volunteering or for additional questions, please email greengrove@olemiss.edu.
